<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've been procrastinating quite a bit lately (hey, I'm doing it right now). Which means that I have spent hours wasting my life on facebook. I'm not proud..</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <br />One thing that I've noticed is a decided upsurge in positivity and inspiration. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm glad. People are struggling. People aren't achieving anything. Lives are being wasted (see above). We all need a bit of inspiration. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What I'm not loving is all of the </span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'Don't waste your time on people who aren't putting in the effort with you/ contacting you'</span></span></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br />style of quotes that I'm seeing. <br /><br />These are great quotes, and I think that they have a time and place. But they are also rather flawed. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br />Here's why-<br /><br />Everyone needs a friend. Enough said. No? Okay, let's keep going.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br />(For my fellow Christian readers) Jesus hung around people who were going no-where, were not positive, and were living what-we-would-consider disgusting lives. As his disciples, we want to be like him. Ergo, we should hang around people who are struggling, who are negative, and who might not have the strength to contact us as often as we feel like they should. <br /><br />I want to quickly add a disclaimer here- if you have a 'friend' who puts you down, makes you feel worthless and horrible, and generally doesn't care about you, then you can certainly do better than them. Side note- if you struggle with your own self-worth issues, then don't surround yourself with people like this.You need positive, upli<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">fting friends.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">However, if self-worth and feeling loved and valuable isn't so much an issue for you, then you should be alright. Naturally, I would advise you to be wise in whom you choose to spend time with. But <b>please don't be selfish <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">with </span>whom you choose to spend your time. </b>Because<b> you're not called to associate </b></span></span><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><u><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>only</b></span></span></u><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b> </b></span></span>with people that you like</b>. You are called to shine Christ's love in a broken, negative, and struggling world. <br /><br />If the reason that they are struggling is deeper than just being a horrible person (and it usually is), then perhaps you can be the person who hangs around long enough to dig through the gross and get to the gold. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every person has value.</span></span> <br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every person needs a helping hand.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every person struggles sometimes.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span></blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br />Be the kind of person who is willing to put their own feelings aside in order to make someone else feel loved and valued. Just because you don't feel warm and fuzzy when, or after, you see them, doesn't mean that they don't need your positive input and love. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br />Basically, hang around people who don't fill your life with positivity and show them Jesus.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My church is a big fan of affirmations. When I first heard them I decided that they were lame and useless. So, I never said them. Then, as I grew older, I started to wonder why these affirmations made me uncomfortable. They kind of reminded me of spells and witchcraft.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've just come back from a conference designed to help us experience greater freedom and break generational bondage. I've been avoiding going for years, but God finally told me to go. So, I did. We prayed through things and broke off ties. All was well. And then affirmations came up. Apparently, in order to keep living in the freedom that we've gained from this weekend, we need to be saying our affirmations. The suggestion is that we do this 3 times a day for 40 days. I want to paint a fair picture, though. They also suggested that to keep growing in God we keep spending time with him, attending church, etc.. That's good. My issue here is that instead of meditating on the Word of God and praying to continue to affirm the fact that I am free of whatever bondage I supposedly had, I am supposed to repeat a paragraph of positive self-focused words about my new-found freedom. I feel like I'm getting snarky, because I'm a bit passionate and frustrated, so let's stop with the story and move to some content.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Let's jump into this. <i><b>Why (I believe that) Christians Should Not Practice Affirmations</b></i>.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>What are affirmations?</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">According to <i>affirmations.com.au</i>, an affirmation is 'a positive statement or judgment that is declared to be true'.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This sounds fine, but let's dig a little deeper. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The idea of an affirmation is that you speak something into existence. By saying positive words over yourself, you change your beliefs and your situation. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">According to <i>successconsciousness.com</i>, affirmations </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'are positive statements that describe a desired situation or goal, and are often repeated, until they get impressed on the subconscious mind. This process, causes the subconscious mind to to (sic) strive and to work on your behalf, to make the positive statement come true.'</span></span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'Your subconscious mind accepts as true what you keep saying. It attracts corresponding events and situations into your life.' </span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Words create life or death </b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I fully believe that words have the power to create life or death. It's Biblical.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Why were words created? </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To communicate? No. To create? Yes.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In Genesis 1, God spoke the world, and everything in it, into existence. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span class="reftext"></span>'God <b><u>said</u></b>, "Let there be light," and there was light.' -Genesis 1:3.</span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The creative power of words is also explored in other parts of the Bible-</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.' Proverbs 10:11 <span class="p"><br /></span></span></span> </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.' Proverbs 12:18 </span></span></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> 'Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.' Proverbs 18:21<span class="p"><br /></span></span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Clearly, our words have power. They are able to bring life and healing.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>So, what's wrong with affirmations, then?</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Affirmations are rooted in <b>New Age</b>-ism and New Thought doctrine.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Affirmations became popular with the birth of the '90s New Age movement. Today they are encouraged by many New Age websites and individuals. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Salem New Age Centre supports the use of affirmations as powerful tools to change someone's life. <i>(http://www.salemctr.com/newage/center32.html)</i></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Louise Hay, who is considered to be a part of the New Thought movement, uses affirmations to 'create your best life'. (<i>http://www.louisehay.com/affirmations/</i>)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The connections between <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">a</span>ffirmations <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">and</span> demonic theories regarding the <i>law of attraction</i> are undeniable. By speaking out the reality that you wish to see, you encourage the universe to send it to you. Therefore, if you claim wealth, then wealth you shall have. Think Rhoda Byrne's <i>The Secret. </i>(NB- I haven't read this book. I've only read reviews)<i><br /></i></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i> </i> </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b> </b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Their connection to <b>spiritualism </b>is alarming.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote>
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'The art of the spoken word is critical in crafting our futures. As a teacher of spirituality, it is my firm belief that we influence the universe word by word. If we dictate to it our wishes, it will respond. When we utter a sound, we emit a sound wave into the universe. This sound wave pierces through the air and becomes a real object. It therefore exists in our world, intangible and invisible. No words are empty words, as every syllable we speak engages energy towards or against us. If you constantly say “I can’t,” the energy of your words will repel the universal force against you. But if you say “I can!” the universe will endow you with the abilities to do just that. So speak away; relinquish your fears and purge your anger, predict your own future and live up to your potential with the 35 affirmations that will change your life.' -Dr Carmen Harra <i>(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-carmen-harra/affirmations_b_3527028.html</i>) <b><br /></b></span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Their use in<b> witchcraft </b>should also ring alarm bells for Christians. I don't want to go into too much detail here. A quick Google search of 'affirmations witchcraft' will bring up many results. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here is one quote from (<i>http://heather.bishoffs.com/im-a-witch-affirmations/</i>)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'According to dear ole Wikipedia, an Affirmation<i> is a declaration that something is TRUE</i>.
It isn’t just a magickal concept – you could consider it “positive
thinking”. Many people utilize it in other aspects of life, like the
business man who adjusts his tie in the bedroom mirror and tells his
reflection, “I will win this account.”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But when it comes to my life, it is simply…witchy.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I believe that what we BELIEVE manifests itself in our lives. That’s
the sole purpose of a witch who practices magick in ritual – to
manifest the change we want to see. What many witches tend to forget is
that “ritual” doesn’t need to be elaborate and have use of every tool
in our arsenal – a simple affirmation is ritual on its own.'</span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b> </b>Yes, positive affirmations are used daily, but the ritual of repeating them daily is another thing. 'I can do this' is an affirmation. It's useful and fine to do. However, repeating daily whatever change you wish to manifest is not the same thing. Affirmations are used for 'conjuring life’s coveted delights through ... state of mind and wording.' (<i>https://pathwaysofwisdom.wordpress.com/tag/new-age/</i>)</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm not an expert in affirmations and their origins and associations. Please, do your own research. There is plenty of information available on the internet.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Never in the Bible did anyone 'say their affirmations'. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By meditating on the Word of God, we affirm the truth of God in our lives and strengthen our spirit.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One argument that I've heard is that when you say your affirmations when you don't need them, as you need them, you will remember them. That's probably true. However, as Christian men and women, <b>our job is not to remember affirmations. Our job is to meditate on the Word of God </b>and to hide it in our hearts (Psalm 119:11). The living Word of God is always more powerful than the man-made words on a page that we speak over ourselves. By studying, and meditating on, the Bible, we place the Word of God deep within our hearts and spirit. When we need this truth, it is there for the Holy Spirit to call to our memory. It is the living Word of God that <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">H</span>is Spirit calls forth in times of trouble and trial. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Not I, But Christ</b> </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The verses above are pretty clear that meditating on the Word of God causes a man (or woman) to prosper. It does not say that repeating affirmations causes his success. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I can repeat that I am loved until the cows come home, but unless I know the scripture that affirms this, it is useless. I know that I am loved because the Word of God tells me so.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.'<span class="p"> John 3:16</span></span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is essential for Christians to see these truths in the word of God.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Repeating positive Biblical truths over your life every day is not necessarily a bad thing. But unless you know the scriptural basis of this truth, then you are just putting a band-aid on an issue. Memorise scriptures and affirm the truth in prayer. Then you will see the Word of God transform your life. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Focus here for a moment- God's Word transforms your life. Emphasis being on God, not your efforts. Saying affirmations is you trying to transform your life. Meditating on scripture is you allowing God to transform your life.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, yes, think positively. Believe that you can, with the grace and<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> aid of God,</span> achieve things.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But don't cut God out of the picture. It's his Word, grace, and power, not your affirmations, that bring about eternal change.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I want to reiterate that telling yourself that you are capable of achieving great things, and speaking positively are both good things that you should be doing. But, as Christians, if you want to see lasting transformation in your life then you need to be meditating on God's Word and spending time with him in prayer on a daily basis, not repeating chants and dreams. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I’ve just had a conversation with my sister about catcalling. Anyway, we are both on the same side of the debate- Nay.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Catcalling refers to ‘<span class="definition">a loud whistle or a comment of a sexual nature made by a man to a passing woman’. (OED)</span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The wolf whistle is another disturbing term for catcalling. ‘Wolf’ as in predator. PREDATOR! In the wild, wolfs howl to communicate with each other. So a wolf whistle essentially communicates that this lady is sexually attractive.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The modern wolf whistle originates from the navy whistle used to call attention to the fact that someone is about to say something important. It was also used by sailors to draw their attention to a passing female. However, catcalling does have an ancient history.</span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Catcalling essentially sexually objectifies women. It places the man (the caller) in a position of perceived superiority and it says that he has the right to determine the woman’s value as a sexual object (not a l<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">iving</span> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">human</span>).</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Even the name is problematic. I mean really, ‘cat’. Let’s not get into that today.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fairly recently, I watched an episode of an ABC show that I cannot recall the name of that addressed the very theme at the heart of this post. In this episode, some women were for catcalling. Or rather they enjoyed it. They didn’t necessarily agree with the idea of catcalling, but they appreciated the attention of the men that confirmed for themselves that they’ve ‘still got it’.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here is an <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/nikki-gloudeman/feminist-flattered-by-catcalling_b_6488382.html" target="_blank">interesting article</a> that looks at how and why a woman might appreciate catcalling.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span></span></span>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But here’s the issue, why does it matter what the man thinks of the woman? He is a random that she has never met who willingly objectifies her from a distance and this gives her a thrill. She gets a thrill that a strange man finds her sexually attractive. I can't judge her for this, but seriously, why do we place so much emphasis on the thoughts and opinions of those of the opposite sex, or of the same sex for that matter? Regardless of whether you are a male or a female, your worth should not be in whether or not someone else considers you sexually desirable. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Man, our society is messed up.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One argument, which kind of links to the above point, is that women should be thanking their cat callers. Umm, what?! That’s like telling a rape victim that they should thank their rapist for choosing them. I know that catcalling is not the same as rape but bear with me here because the point is valid. The idea is that the caller chose to tell this woman that she is good looking, attractive, and desirable. Something that you want to know, right? Well, possibly, but certainly not from a random with no invested interest in your life. Both catcalling and rape sexually objectify. They develop a dangerous power balance and reinforce a patriarchal society. They give the man a privileged position in determining the woman’s worth and asserting dominance over her. No, I will not be thanking my cat callers.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For an argument that defends catcalling as well-meaning and an integral part of masculinity and our society, <a href="http://www.express.co.uk/expressyourself/263000/You-just-put-your-lips-together-and-wolf-whistle" target="_blank">read here</a>.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span><a href="http://www.express.co.uk/expressyourself/263000/You-just-put-your-lips-together-and-wolf-whistle"><br /></a></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Personally, I don’t associate masculinity with the ability to objectify others, but let’s keep moving.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I was younger (still at school and wearing a school uniform might I add), before I really understood the deeper issues at play, I did say thank you. Partly because it felt good for someone to think that I was good looking, and partly because I wanted to embarrass the caller by showing them that they hadn’t embarrassed me. However, the truth is that if someone is only interested in you because of your appearance, then that is an interest that you <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">could proba<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">bly</span></span> do without. But that is an entirely different argument for another day.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But if catcalling is okay, then where is the line? Is it okay to approach a woman and tell her how much you appreciate her as a sexual object? No, but it is okay to do this from a ‘harmless’ distance? Is it okay to force yourself on a woman as a sign of how much you appreciate her as a sexual object? Certainly not, but it is okay to force your opinion of her body as a sexual object on her from a distance. Clearly, the issue is more complex than a simple whistle from afar.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here’s the thing- I don’t like being sexually objectified. I don’t even like being called ‘hot’ or ‘sexy’. It’s not a compliment to me. If you want to appreciate me then you may call me pretty, but even better than that, get to know me and find something about my character, personality, or achievements to compliment. Or my clothes. I love when people compliment my clothes. <span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">:)</span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, there are my opinions on catcalling.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What do you think? Have you ever catcalled? Have you ever been catcalled? Are you yea or nay?</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUz2qDDI6w-bhEN6-h4c_dD9WZwmtcMuI9zOJSTnm5m80iwLFhwi9s5gGLT92q4za6w9rl5Ga3U5zY7nN-GXD5GCxrIvCusY6Ygw7wvlBlkLDDV3uRI2RPfRzt8rb0wIwSjZipaA-khrD_/s1600/Memma+Sign.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="50" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUz2qDDI6w-bhEN6-h4c_dD9WZwmtcMuI9zOJSTnm5m80iwLFhwi9s5gGLT92q4za6w9rl5Ga3U5zY7nN-GXD5GCxrIvCusY6Ygw7wvlBlkLDDV3uRI2RPfRzt8rb0wIwSjZipaA-khrD_/s200/Memma+Sign.jpg" width="200" /></a></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I began writing my last post about the new year, I had intended to write quite a different post. I had intended to write about diaries.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you are like me, a diary is an essential aspect of your life. Without it your all over the place and you can't confirm any times to catch up with friends, hold meetings, or do much of anything else. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, as a diary lover, I wanted to share a few of my diary finding essentials.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Weekly spread. I like to view my life by the week or the month. I can't just live a day at a time, which means that a day-to-a-page diary simply does not work work for me. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Yearly calendar. Most diaries have an overall view of the current and following year at the front. I use these to plan out big deadlines, such as assignments or important events. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. Prettiness. Yep, I require prettiness in my everyday items. Usually I purchase a $5 diary from the cheap store and then I slip it into one of my diary covers. This year was a bit different because my sister gave me a diary for Christmas. It is a <a href="http://www.forevernew.com.au/harriet-medium-diary-2023318501005" target="_blank">beautiful diary from Forever New</a>. I can't afford to buy their things for myself, but I have no trouble accepting them as gifts. :)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. Size. I always select an A5 or A6. The smaller it is, the easier that it is to travel around with it. However, you still need to be able to write in it, so I find that a pocket sized diary is a little too small for me.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now for the fun part- photos. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here are a few photos of some diary covers that I have made before!</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've posted this one before. It has a built in bookmark made out of a pink ribbon. <span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I used this diary cover this year but didn't need the bookmark that I sewed in because the diary already had one. (Please excuse the dirtiness..)</span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So much fun! One of the best parts of making a diary cover is that you can reuse it multiple times and have a pretty cover every year! The two covers that I have shown you today are two different sizes, which means that regardless of which diary size I buy, whether it be A5 or A6, I will have a cute cover for it. Wooh for personalised diaries.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Well it's that time of year again. Both the beginning and the end. A time of hope and a time of hopelessness. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At this time, people stop to reflect on the year that has passed and the year that will come. For many, it is a time of sorrow as they recall the loved ones that they have lost and the dreams and plans that are still yet to be fulfilled. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A new year can be a time of great joy as we prepare for the coming months and plan our health and lifestyle down to an often unattainable tee. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As with everyone else, I too reflect at this time of year as I wonder what this year will bring and recall the triumphs and tears of the year before. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Speaking of recalling (and before this post gets too serious, I would like to share a memory with all of you). </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyway, back to this blog post.. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My news feed is currently filled with people wishing each other a happy and joyous year and reflecting on how great it was to spend New Years Eve with dearly loved friends and family. Here's the issue though. We should be doing that every day, or at least every week or two. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Spending a day dancing or chilling or exploring with people who make us happy shouldn't be something unusual or something that happens only on special occasions. Life is too exciting to waste doing unexciting things. Now, don't get me wrong, we still need to work and eat and sometimes do mundane tasks, but these shouldn't be your everything. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Regularly spend time with the ones that you love and at the end of the year you'll be able to reflect on how much your relationships have grown and on how great your life is, rather than reflecting on the promotions that you missed, the partners that didn't come, and the marks that you didn't quite attain. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Enjoy life everyday and why not re-watch HSM while your at it? :D</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I haven't posted in quite a while. In fact, I do believe that in my last post, I promised to be more regular with my posting. I wont make that promise this time. I am busy, but I do intend to be more frequent. Nevertheless, I can't honestly promise that I will be.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyway, onto today's topic-</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The concerns of a Christian bookworm:</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(aka- the problems that Christians have when they read)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Disclaimer- these are my experiences. Let me know yours in the comments below :) )</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Praying for the characters. As Christians, we are told to pray about all things (Philippians 4:6). When we practice this, it starts to become second nature. As such, I've found that I pray for the characters and the plot of almost every book that I read. 'God bless them', 'God please look after...', God please heal...', Lord please may they realise...'. I generally catch myself mid-prayer and remember that they are fictional characters in an already-completed novel, but then something else happens and I start praying again.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Moralising. It can be difficult if the characters of the book do not share your moral codes. If the book is written in first person, then the reader is more likely to identify with the concerns of the character. If the concerns of the character, and their response to them, do not align with your morals and beliefs, then this may serve as a barrier to your ability to fully enjoy the text. This is certainly not an experience limited to Christians, though.</span></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. Missing the point. I know that not all Christians are the same, but I am very sheltered. I've often read a book and completely missed some of the more inappropriate metaphors. These metaphors add depth to the text, so missing them isn't always ideal.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. Language. When a character uses profanities and inappropriate innuendos, it can make for a very difficult read. I have Christian friends who wouldn't think twice about this and others, like me, who find it very off putting. I can almost guarantee that if you've sworn in the text, then by the third time, you've lost me. If </span></span><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">you've sworn at least three times in the first chapter, then I don't have the time for the book. Of course, I'm not like this in reality with my friends; I won't leave if they swear, but having time for people and having time for characters in a book are two very different things.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5. Content. I'm a literature student, and there have been books with I have been assigned which I have not read simply due to the inappropriate content. If the book is about vampires, witches, or other occultist beings/ practices, then I'm out. That pretty much excludes an entire genre. Of course, there are other texts in other genres which also possess content which I wont' read. Sometimes this means that I miss out on 'classics' or 'masterpieces', but I don't mind so much. What I feel God wants me to avoid, I will avoid.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I feel like this post is a poorly written, so I apologise if I didn't make to much sense.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Please let me know what you think!</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I had intended to do much more with this post, but given it's length, I will stick to answering one question; </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>why do I remember</b>?</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Remembrance day was always something that we participated in at school. By that, I mean that we sat silently at a special school assembly and listened to an elderly gentleman, usually from the RSL, talk about how important the day was, and how important it was to remember. This was followed by the last post and a minute silence, filled with coughing. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Clearly, this service never meant anything to me. Try as I might, I could never really grasp the idea of remembering men (and women) who had died many years ago. To me, they were dead, hence, our act of remembrance could do nothing for them. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, once again, why do I remember?</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">April 2013/4- I finally understood what it is to 'remember them'. I got up early and attended the (over before dawn) dawn service at my local RSL. I stood in respect for the families who have lost loved ones through war and other military activities. I attended for the families. I mourned for the families. I still did not understand fully why we remember those who have fought and died. I remember also those who have survived, and the horrible things that they have experienced. The horrible and challenging things that they still must face. Yet still I wondered, why remember the dead?</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> June/ July 2014- My trip to the Western Front. (If you are interested, leave a comment below and I will describe my trip for you.) This trip changed things for me. I find it difficult to describe, but somehow, it almost feels like the soldiers are waiting in their graves to be visited. It's like they sit together on the grave stones and wait. They wait for us to visit and mourn. They wait to be remembered. It is one of the oddest things to feel and think, and I understand that I sound a little bit crazy, but it's like that. </span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here is an extract from my journal- </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Oddly, I some how feel that these men are still present. Not in a spiritual way etc. But when we go to the graves, it is almost as though they are there, waiting for us, joking together and being remembered, This is really odd ... but it helps me to feel better about the [multitude of] graves."</span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Of course, we must not forget the many names of the missing engraved into stone walls. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"I have had this great desire to honour each individual man [(buried, missing, or returned)] by reading his name and learning his story. Throughout this journey, I have struggled with the impossibility of this task, feeling as though each story deserve[s] to be told."</span></span></blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Perhaps, it must be enough that someone is remembering them, be they family, other, or all of Australia. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This year, I wear a poppy for each of the soldiers, be they Australian, New Zealander, or of an other nationality. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Before I go, I wanted to share with you my first attempt at nail art- poppies.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Let me know what you think. :)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here ends our series on Vintage Wardrobe Essentials. Thank you so much for reading them all. :) I really do appreciate it. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Today, I thought that I would make a printable list for you. </span></span></div>

<br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I should make another note that this is my <i>wishlist </i>of essentials. I do not own all of these items, nor am I saying that you must/ should, should you decide to adopt a vintage style.</span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This wardrobe guide should see you through Summer, Autumn and Spring, however you may wish to add some quilted skirts, more long sleeve blouses and some knitted items to see you through Winter. This type of wardrobe sees me through Winter, but I live in Australia and I rarely feel the cold. I'd like to add some Winter-specific clothes to my wardrobe though because they are quite pretty. </span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We are almost finished with our series on Vintage Wardrobe Essentials series. This final post may be a tad longer than the others, or maybe not. I guess we will see. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">7. ACCESSORIES</span></span><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3 Pairs Lace Socks- because they are just so pretty.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3 Pairs White Tights- perfect for when the weather gets cooler.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3 Pairs Nude Stockings- every lady should have at least one pair. They add an element of class and glamour to a simple sun dress. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Petticoat</span></span><a name='more'></a></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Slip- sometimes you don't need a petticoat, but it's still nice to have a lining.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2-3 Brooches- at the very least 1 pearl brooch would be nice. Brooches are good to take around with you in your handbag just in case you spill some pasta sauce, or other incriminating evidence, on your blouse.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Necklaces- think pearls and pretty pendants. Instant glamour! You decide how many you need. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Scarves- scarves can completely change your look. Depending on the size, you can also wear them as shawls. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Raincoat and Umbrella- these are just basic essentials. A raincoat can keep your clothes pristine even in the rain so that when you walk in doors no body would even know you've been out in the rain.You can get very pretty styles of raincoats, or a see through rain coat is very becoming and allows you to still show your pretty clothes even in the rain. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3 Pairs White Gloves- gloves add an instant elegance to any outfit. Keep in mind that they can get quite dirty though. I have written two posts on gloves already; <a href="http://memmas-memoranda.blogspot.com.au/2014/02/fits-like-glove.html" target="_blank">one simply on gloves</a> and <a href="http://memmas-memoranda.blogspot.com.au/2014/03/cleaning-gloves.html" target="_blank">one on cleaning gloves</a>.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 White Hat- basic sun protection is a necessity but it always helps when it looks pretty.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1-2 White Bags- pretty self explanatory I think.</span></span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They say that every girl loves her shoes! So I thought that it was time that we looked at which shoes you need in your vintage-inspired wardrobe.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">6. SHOES</span></span><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Pair White Closed Toe Heels- Almost every photo of a lady from the 50's or 60's has her wearing a lovely pair of white shoes. I'm a dancer so I prefer closed toe, but if you prefer an open toe shoe than by all means, change these, and those below to open toe shoes. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Pair Closed Toe Nude Heels</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Pair Black Heels</span></span></li>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here begins Week Five of Our Vintage Wardrobe Essentials Series. We have covered all of the Basics and I really have no idea what to call today's list... I have simply called it;</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">M<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ISCELLANEOUS</span></span>.</span></span><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Playsuit- these are so cute and so vintage. They are perfect to wear to the park, to the beach, or even out for the day. Imagine how much more fun cleaning the house would be if you did it in a vintage-inspired playsuit! </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Swimsuit- if, like me, you never go swimming, you may not need this. I'm clinging to a vain hope that, if I end up getting my ideal swimsuit, I will one day go swimming<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">.</span> </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Over Dress- I have no idea what the technical name is, but basically a short dress that you can wear over your swimsuit when you go to the beach. These are so cute and, especially if your swimmers aren't vintage-inspired, an overdress can provide an instantly vintage feel. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2-3 Night Gowns/ Bloomers and Camisoles/ Pajamas- whatever is most comfortable for you. Vintage-inspired night clothes make going to <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">sleep </span>an absolute delight (not that <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">sleeping isn't</span> great anyway).</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1-2 Pairs High Waist Shorts- for if you don't particularly feel like wearing a skirt (or it's too windy) high waist shorts mean you can still look and feel beautiful</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1-3 Skirt, Blouse, and Jacket Combinations- it's always nice to look smart and these outfits do just the trick. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Another week, another post. I'm quite enjoying this series. I hope that you are too. :) Please don't hesitate to comment and have your say.</span></span><br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We have already covered the three most commonly thought of vintage clothing essentials, so today we are looking at another very important, although often forgotten style.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. JACKETS</span></span><br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With four seasons in the year, it is almost guaranteed that the weather will get cooler and you will need to put something over your summer dresses to make them winter appropriate. I mean, you could get winter skirts and dresses as well, <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">but anyway..</span></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 White Cardigan</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2-3 Coloured Cardigans- consider your wardrobe. What colours and styles are going to suit it<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">?</span> If you have many patterned dresses, than perhaps a solid colour will be better. If all of your clothes are solid colours, you <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">might </span>be able to wear a patterned cardigan.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2-3 Jumpers- I'm Australian, but I think that if you are from elsewhere, you may be more familiar with the term 'sweater' or 'pull over'. Apparently these are all slightly different though. Basically, whatever warm item of clothing you would normally wear should work. See above for notes on style etc. I would tend to go for a pastel colour as these give an instantly vintage look.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2-3 Jackets, Crop o<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">r</span> Otherwise- again, consider what will match your clothes. It is so easy to see a cute jacket and buy it before realising that nothing you own matches. A good excuse for a new outfit, yes, but also what can turn out to be a very expensive purchase.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1-2 Coats- 1 white coat is enough for me, but you had better be the judge for yourself. You may want 1 white and 1 black, or you may not, whatever you like. </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Shawl or Short Sleeve Lace Shrug- excellent for when the weather is fresh but not cold.</span></span></li>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Week Three Already! Today, we are continuing the Vintage Wardrobe Essentials Series.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I do hope that you have enjoyed it thus far.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Can you guess what we are looking at today?</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That's right, blouses :) (If you didn't guess that, I'm sure that it was your next choice ;) )</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. BLOUSES</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Blouses are the perfect vintage wardrobe essential because they allow you to wear your skirts (after all, we don't want to be half naked :S ) and they can also be worn over dresses (this means that, 4 dresses + 1 blouse = 8 outfits!). This makes them a pretty cool and pretty essential wardrobe piece. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<ul>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2 White Blouses</span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2-4 Short Sleeve Pastel Blouses- Once again, the number depends on your needs and you choice of colours. If pastels are not your thing, choose whatever colours or prints you love. The main aim of you vintage-inspired wardrobe is for you to be confident and beautiful. You don't want to look like everybody else, and you certainly don't want to hate what you are wearing!</span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2-4 Long Sleeve Pastel Blouses- Because Winter and Autumn can get quite cold. </span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Depending on the shade of your clothes, you may want 2 Dark Blouses.</span></span></div>
</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here's where you need to be a bit smart. We will look at accessories another time, but keep in mind that if your blouse is on the sheer side, you will need 3-4 white singlet tops to maintain modesty. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Last week we began a series on Vintage Wardrobe Essentials</span><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So today we are looking at the next vintage wardrobe essential; dresses!</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dresses are perfect for every vintage wardrobe because, let's be honest, when you think vintage clothes, you think dresses. Am I right? </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So what dresses do you need?</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. DRESSES</span></span></div>
<ul>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4 Pretty Pattern Day Dresses- There are seven days in a week and for most of these you will probably be out and about so I think 4 is a decent number, but as I said in the previous post, get only the amount that you want/ need/ can afford.</span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4 Pale Pastel Dresses- Okay, so you don't really need these, but I wanted to put them in anyway because pastels are so versatile. You can wear them in the days and in the evenings. I said four because I can never decide which colours I prefer (pink/ yellow/ mint-green/ purple)..</span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2 Evening Dresses- one light, one dark. If you go out in the evenings more than the days, or even more often than I do, which trust me is not hard to achieve, than perhaps you will need more evening dresses than this. I say light and dark to leave you with the freedom to pick your own colours/ shades.</span></span></div>
</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span>
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once again, choose a style which you love and which loves you in return. You could even include many different styles, think Peter Pan Collar, Scalloped Edge, Shift, Dropped Waist, Circle, Pencil, ... the list goes on.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Last week, I found it difficult to find a photo of a skirt, this week I'm finding it difficult to find just one dress. There are so many perfect vintage dresses. If you have a great deal of time on you hands, than google it :) If you don't have much time, you'd best wait until the weekend. I'm warning you, once you start, it is very difficult to stop. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">21 styles in one image! :) Enjoy.</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've been thinking about wardrobes lately. More specifically about
wardrobe essentials.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So for the next I don't know how long, we will be answering the question;</span></span><br />
<div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What does every (vintage inspired) girl need in her
wardrobe?</span></span><br />
<div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Please don't hesitate to respond in the comments after each post. I'd love to know what your wardrobe essentials are. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><div>
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">DISCLAIMER-</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I may be a bit over the top here (I like my clothes and think that you can never have too many). If you are just getting started, add these in gradually. There is no need to go broke. Try Op Shops and other cheap shops, or consider buying some fabric on special and having a go at sewing your own creations. :) Also, please remember that my numbers are only a guide. By all means, change the numbers to suit your needs. If you only need 1 patterned skirt then don't bother getting 3. Get only the amount that you want/ need/ can afford, and have fun playing with the clothes which you already have as well :) </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"></span><div>
</div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;">This list is a reflection of what my wardrobe would look like in my ideal world and should be used as a guide, not a definitive list of 'essentials'. Enjoy!</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I did some wardrobe essential googling and found lists
which included white tops and jeans etc. My list is a little different.
Jeans are great as a quick solution to going down to the shops, but
when my current pair fall apart I don't think I will replace them. I
much prefer skirts and dresses.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, what is on my list???</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. SKIRTS</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Skirts are a great way to add an instantly vintage look to any wardrobe. Floral patterns and vintage styles are making a come-back, but you may also want to consult the Op Shops. Alternatively, if you are skilled with a needle, you can sew your own skirts. There are plenty of videos on Youtube which are very helpful when it comes to the basics of skirt sewing. I will share some in another post (hopefully) soon.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Plain White Skirt</span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Plain Dark (Navy or Black) Skirt</span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 Fitted Black Skirt- whilst this is optional, it can give a completely different look to your wardrobe, and is great for evening wear. I often forget that vintage styles also included some more tightly fitted skirts, think pencil skirts and the like. </span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2 Pretty Skirt Overlays- think lace or shimmer. This will instantly transform a simple white or navy day skirt into an evening skirt :)</span></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3 Pattern Skirts </span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In my <a href="http://memmas-memoranda.blogspot.com.au/2014/02/fits-like-glove.html" target="_blank">last post</a>, I shared some of my gloves with you. As promised, here is the follow-up post on cleaning your gloves.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cleaning gloves is a long and, at times, boring procedure. In truth, it's not that long, but it feels it. It requires care and patience. If you are planning on cleaning many pairs at once, I suggest turning on the DVD-player and watching a film. If you want to feel really classy, watch a film where they wear gloves. :) That should make the task much less of a task and more of a privilege. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So basically, you will need some nice white, unscented soap (I use Lux because it's what I have, but anything will work), some warm water in a bucket, and a plain white towel. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 1- Place glove on hand</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 2- Dip dirty section of glove into water and gently rub soap on offending area</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step3- Rub fingers together and over dirty sections until dirt and residue lifts and glove looks clean</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 4- Remove hand and lay glove flat on towel. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 5 - Repeat all steps with next glove</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once all of your gloves are clean, a couple of rinses in warm water is all that is required to remove the soapy residue and provide you with perfectly clean gloves. YAY! :)</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I find that after a while, it becomes difficult to slide a wet hand into a glove and hence I don't always wear the gloves when cleaning them. Mine don't stretch or shrink or anything when I do so, but do be careful.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is not such a long process after all; I recently cleaning 6 or 7 pairs in 20 - 30 minutes. :)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Thank you for reading! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Enjoy your afternoon,</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I recently received a parcel in the mail from my Grandma. I wasn't expecting anything so you may imagine how overjoyed I was when I opened it to find a collection of gloves. Not just any gloves mind you, my great-grandmothers gloves which have not been worn by anyone but her! How cool is that. I have other gloves which I was given as presents for Christmas and my birthday. These gloves were unworn from the 1960's and still had their original price tags and labels on them! I have such a lovely collection now! I wouldn't mind a few more, although I'm not sure I need them; as is I have trouble decided which ones to wear with each outfit.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Gloves are such a beautiful addition to any outfit. I wear them every Sunday for church. I have a general (lazy) rule which means I wear the same outfit on a Monday to Uni as I wore on Sunday. I don't usually see the same people so it's a great little way to make sure that I look pretty and to save time on Monday morning. For practicality, I don't wear my gloves on the Monday, which I feel sort of brings down the look of the outfit. It makes less of a statement and has less of a classic vibe without the gloves.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, because I love gloves, I thought that I would share some with you, but then I thought that that might bore you, so I decided against cataloguing my collection here. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">However, to add substance to this post, below are both from my great-grandmothers collection.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is one of my pale pink gloves (I think that they are my favourite). I love the detail in the fingers. It is so well made.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some beautiful embroidery down the arm of an elbow-length glove. Oh so pretty!</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Gloves are, obviously, worn on one's hands, which means that they are wont to get dirty. In my next post, I will share with you some ideas for cleaning your oh-so-special collection of gloves.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Enjoy your day,</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">For all of my vintage loving followers, I simply had to share this. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">I follow a blog called <a href="http://www.rosaspinavintage.com/">http://www.rosaspinavintage.com</a>. She always has beautiful outfits and a stunning photography. Recently one of the outfits caught my eye and I scrolled to the end of the post to find out where the beautiful dress was from. It was from <a href="http://www.orlakiely.com/" target="_blank">Orla Kiely</a>. Never heard of them? Neither had I. But now I'm glad I have.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">The clothes are undeniably out of my price range, but oh so good to look at.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">But the real reason I felt that I needed to share this with you was because I continued to explore this website and came across their 'film' section. WOW! </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">Basically each film is a showcase of their Summer and Spring or Winter and Autumn collections. They are, however, created in such a way that they are engaging, creative and works of art in their own right. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">So, <a href="http://www.orlakiely.com/uk/?Films/AW13" target="_blank">here </a>is the link. I encourage you to watch them. You will not be disappointed!</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>

<br /><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, I have been watching <i><a href="http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_ePOdU-b3xcKOsj8aU2Tnztt6N9mEmur" target="_blank">Emma Approved</a></i> recently. <i>Emma Approved</i> is the latest vlog series released by the wonderful people who brought us <i><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/LizzieBennet" target="_blank">The Lizzie Bennet Diaries</a></i>. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Basically, what these series do is take one of Jane Austen's novels and turn it into a modern vlog (video blog) from the main characters perspective. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am excited about this one as <i>Emma </i>is my favourite Austen novel (as of today I have read them all bar <i>Sanditon</i>!), and I find the characters to be well cast. Mr. Knightly is not bad to look at either, which is always a plus. </span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Feeling the absence of this vlog, and procrastinating from writing my essay, I have decided to vlog about the <i>Emma </i>Adaptations I have seen.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, let us start with the book;</span></span><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Emma </i>tells the story of a young, charming and wealthy woman who delights in playing matchmaker to her friends and possesses no desire for marriage herself. Being a work by Jane Austen, Emma does indeed fall in love, however this potential courtship is threatened by <em>No Plot Spoilers Here- read the book :)</em>. I really do recommend that you read it; Jane Austen's style is very well written and witty.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now the films;</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Emma </i>has been made into many different films, including the 1996 production directed by Douglas McGrath and starring Gwyneth Paltrow. I love this version! It is well acted and charmingly witty to the extreme. I feel uncomfortable when Emma is reprimanded by Mr. Knightly, and cannot contain my excitement when they discuss the venison stew and new drain. Naturally this will make no sense if you've not read the book or watched the film so once again, I urge you to do so. :)</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><a href="http://zeitschrift.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/jeremy-northam-and-gwyneth-paltrow.jpg?w=300&h=225" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://zeitschrift.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/jeremy-northam-and-gwyneth-paltrow.jpg?w=300&h=225" /></a></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Another film, <i>Clueless </i>(1995), directed by Amy Heckerling, was the movie of a generation. <em>Clueless</em> is less of an adaptation and more of an appropriation of Jane Austen's novel. Here we meet Cher and her friends as she deciphers the world of parties, school, love and growing up. The film explores many of the same themes as the novel and has many plot similarities, as one would expect. This film is comedic and endearing throughout. If you have not watched it than please do yourself a favour and watch it. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><a href="http://90sflashback.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/clueless.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://90sflashback.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/clueless.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I believe I have spoken for long enough. These are three of my favourite Emma adaptations/ appropriations. When I watch them, I do not view them as adaptations of the text, but rather as separate works, enjoyable in their own right. </span></span><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Which is your favourite version of Emma? </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Speaking about a fair, every year we have an agricultural show in our town, and today was that day. We went and watched the wood chopping, applauding, as always, for the youngest and slowest competitor; saw the pavilions, admiring the wonderful displays of needlework, art, quilting, baking and gardening; and had a quick game of the clowns. I never fail to win the consolation prize which has made a worthwhile addition to my dog's toy box. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After collecting a bucket of fairy floss we made our way home and waited out the hours until the fireworks display, viewed as always from our conveniently placed bedroom window. Our show has a great (and long) display of fireworks and, although I must honestly admit that I tuned out in the middle, I do admire the big purple ones, as well as the collection of fireworks which turn into gold and pink, purple or green, artworks. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">'I am finally on holidays', a statement which would normally lead into a fantastic and pitiful segue where I presently apologise for my many months of absence. So yes, here I go: I am sorry for not posting for a while. But I do intend to post more regularly now. :)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyway, with all the formalities behind us, I have some very exciting news; I have, today, completed reading <i>Mrs Miniver!</i> <i>Mrs Miniver</i> was written by Jan Struther, and while the book was first published in 1939, the short articles which make it up, were published between 1937 and 1939 in the Court pages of <i>The Times</i>. This particular edition, which I have now read, was published in 1943 and includes an additional article, which was published in <i>The Queen's Book of the Red Cross</i>.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The stories follow Mrs Miniver, an ideal British housewife and mother in the years leading up to, and beginning, World War Two, along with her husband, Clem, sons, Vin and Toby, and daughter, Judy. As one reads Mrs Miniver's thoughts on life and society, they are seamlessly introduced to her neighbours, friends and family in a manner which is both endearing and well written. Filled with many anecdotes and metaphors which were/ are applicable both in the interwar years, and today. Mrs Miniver's wit and charm is an absolute delight!</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are also some lovely insights into marriage, parenting, children, family, and life in general. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Each story is filled with wonderful quotes which I only wish I could remember and share with you, and with those whom I am regularly acquainted... I cannot, unfortunately, recall all of the remarkable witticisms of this equally remarkable lady however. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you do not have access to a print copy of the book, you can find it here in digital form;</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><a href="http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0600141.txt" target="_blank">http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0600141.txt </a></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Mrs Miniver </i>is not only a book, though. In 1942, it was turned into a film. It is through this film that I first met Mrs Miniver and her family. I, at first, expected the book to be similar to the film, but although a few minor plot details have been adapted from the book for the film, the two are almost entirely different.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img class="irc_mut" height="393" id="irc_mi" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBmLW650LzLvPomWktoiZIkYe2KAKL88z26zEuNwFDpQKmdktsf7kN7NvkhBA_PiqEJnyazAdt7Ewy6PQ3EIl5ORfVjeroWBZuX-dwX5qIozpNpmJbwNOIqm9jP2_Y4SGfgsAo-y6xEI_P/s1600/mrsminiver1.jpg" style="margin-top: 0px;" width="277" /> </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The film takes place during World War Two, and promises to leave you feeling a complicated mixture of feelings, from endeared to saddened. I, myself, am unable to watch it without crying.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The cast are amazing also. Starring Greer Garson and Walter Pigeon (who have been paired in other films as well), the film is a truly moving and well done adaptation of Jan Struther's wonderful stories.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm not going to even attempt to thrill you with my criticisms of the book and film; I think they are both fantastic and encourage everyone to read/ watch them. If you require a detailed plot outline, a quick Google search should suffice. :)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">Anyway with Trove, you can gain (free!) access to old copies of The Australian Women's Weekly. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">One of my favourite things about the magazine issues are the advertisements. They are seriously funny! I can't say that that is all I like, though. I also love the patterns, fashion columns, recipes, film information, etc. You may even complete the crosswords and other such puzzles! Awesome? I think so. </span></span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">WOW; it has been a while since I last blogged. You have my sincerest apologies. I don't really have an excuse. I could talk about how busy I've been (except I haven't been overly busy), I could tell you that I haven't had much to say (but that's not strictly true either). So I won't bother listing my excuses; I will, instead, give you a very cute leg warmers pattern. ...</span></span><br />
<br /><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Not just any leg warmers; adorable STIRRUP BOW LEG WARMERS!!! :D</span></span><br />
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp21SmsSufr54Xm78t2Iw2TPApiO650h0tVx80voM3g65cDOn3QJPHC2DWuzc8Jx75tmpwH_np_vGrC8VVLXYItAk8BvYZ6LkDnQXaakPNkwPznZzAcGycdTW9o_nORpla7uHJb7-j02-n/s1344/in+use.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp21SmsSufr54Xm78t2Iw2TPApiO650h0tVx80voM3g65cDOn3QJPHC2DWuzc8Jx75tmpwH_np_vGrC8VVLXYItAk8BvYZ6LkDnQXaakPNkwPznZzAcGycdTW9o_nORpla7uHJb7-j02-n/s320/in+use.jpg" width="245" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
CUTE!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What do you think?</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Okay, so my ballet classes are at night time, and needless to say I never want to get started because it's SO cold. So I decided to knit myself some leg warmers (pink of course ;) ).</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As you can see, one leg warmer is longer than, and not as well done as, the other. This is because I was originally working from a pattern that I couldn't quite master, so I decided to just do my own thing. Naturally I forgot how many rows I did when it came time to do the second... oops. If you use my pattern, you shouldn't have any problem with this though. :)</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The shorter one (on the right of the screen) was the second, and best, one I did. </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Originally I was using this pattern <a href="http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/90667AD.html" target="_blank">http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/90667AD.html</a>, but after my failed purl attempt, I decided to just use it as a guide. It is a decent and relatively simply pattern, though, so by all means use it. (I don't know if you need to register to use it or not, but if you do, it is free anyway!) </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here is an up-close view of the bow. Naturally you'll need to shape it a bit before you sew it in. If you don't feel confident that the bow will be on the correct side, you can always stitch it all separately and then assemble it and stitch it on; that would be no problem at all.</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Recently my sister was wed, and prior to this we held a delightful little kitchen tea. It was outside at the Botanic Gardens and we had some trays of food for the guests to enjoy. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyway, as we are all well aware, you cannot have food without adorable labels.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, I made some!!! And now I'm sharing them with you!!! :D Aren't I lovely?! haha</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Aren't they cute? The birds are yellow because that is my sisters favourite colour, and was half the colour scheme for the wedding. The birds matched the theme also. These would also work wonderfully as ingredient labels for your kitchen!</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></span><br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Anyway it would be an option to change the colour to suit whatever event you are hosting. And if you would like a copy of a blank sign just leave a comment letting me know and I will upload a free printable version. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
